Trail Overview
Pot Point Road offers a scenic and approachable offroad drive through the heart of Prentice Cooper State Forest on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Running roughly 5.1 miles, this dirt and gravel route features a mild elevation profile ranging between 1,744 and 1,986 feet with about 516 feet of climbing. The trail begins near a large staging area and pond off Game Reserve Road, then winds eastward through dense hardwood canopies.
With a technical rating of 2, the trail is generally straightforward to navigate in dry conditions, though high-clearance four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended to comfortably clear the large erosion-control humps and water bars built into the hills. Wet weather changes the dynamic, turning the dirt sections muddy and slick, which increases the difficulty. Cellular service is mostly reliable throughout the drive, but offroaders should plan ahead for seasonal closures, as the forest's dirt roads typically close to motorized vehicles from late December to mid-March and during scheduled state park managed hunts.
Access Description
Prentice Cooper State Forest roads are closed to motorized vehicles from December 20 through March 15 annually. The forest and its roads are also closed during state-managed big game hunts, which occur periodically in the spring and fall; visitors should consult the Tennessee Division of Forestry or Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) schedules before visiting. There are no fees or permits required for general day-use driving.
