Trail Overview
Crumely Loop is a mellow 2.6-mile forest road tucked into the heart of Chuck Swan State Forest. Like all the roads here, it's an active logging route, so keep an eye out for trucks and yield when needed. Several old roads branch off along the way, but most are closed to motorized vehicles; just follow the signs and stay the course. This loop is suitable for just about any vehicle. You won't need high clearance or 4WD under normal conditions, but wet weather can change that fast. Mud holes and mild washouts do show up after a good rain, so check the forecast before you roll out. It's a two-way route, though it narrows to a single lane in places. Fortunately, there are plenty of wide spots to pull off and let others pass. There's nothing technical to it--no rocks to crawl or ruts to straddle (unless there's a heavy rain), but it's rich with wildlife. Expect to see deer, wild turkey, the occasional black bear, and maybe even a snake sunning itself on the road. A handful of sinkholes dot the loop as reminders that this land is still shifting beneath your tires. Crumely's a great spot to slow down, take it all in.
