Trail Overview

White House Gulch FS RD 477 offers offroaders a scenic, relatively easy journey through the beautiful pine forests of the southern Black Hills. This trail is ideal for stock high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes looking for a relaxed ride with stunning views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. The route primarily consists of a dirt two-track that winds through mixed conifer stands, offering a classic Black Hills driving experience. While the majority of the trail is a straightforward cruise, drivers should remain alert for changing conditions, as the dirt surface can quickly turn slick and impassable during or after heavy rainfall. Most of the drive is rated easy, but a single ledgy, rocky section introduces a moderate obstacle that will test wheel placement and vehicle clearance. Stock rigs may need to choose their lines carefully through this rock garden, while built vehicles will handle it with ease. The trail provides excellent connectivity to the broader network of Forest Service roads near Bear Mountain, making it a perfect segment to include in a longer day of exploring the area. Seasonal closures may apply during winter months, so checking with the Black Hills National Forest admin before heading out is recommended.
