Trail Overview

Moses Hill is a scenic point-to-point trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is named for a very steep portion that gets you to the top of the mountain, which is tree covered, but a short walk brings you to an overlook that allows you to see out of the trees to the surrounding valley. This steep portion is the most challenging part of the trail. It can also be hiked to get to the lookout, and there is a trail to bypass the steep portion, but you don't get the views without doing that section.

Difficulty

There is a short, steep portion of trail that is fairly loose rock. There are also some ledges that could make things interesting for short wheelbase ATVs and stock SUVs.

this trail is about 14 mi round trip from start to finish there are several technical rocky areas going downhill just pay attention to what you're doing whether you're on a side-by-side or a dirt bike there's a lot of wash out areas red clay standing water some mud holes. The funnest part is when you're turning around at the very bottom and you're coming back up the hill that's the best pick up some speed the third or fourth gear on a dirt bike and you're just sailing on top of all the rocks.

Okay so if you don't have a lifted vehicle I don't think it's possible to take that east route if you're coming from the South. there's a 4 foot boulder to navigate. you can go around it kind of but you need good tires to not slip. it's really cool up there if you take that difficult route but it's tough. If I wasn't in a bronco badlands, no chance. a lifted jeep would do fine. the same sort of deal for going down. really steep angle but not as many large rocks or roots to navigate if you were approaching from the north. gate was open when we went from the South

Steep incline and decline. 25⁰ pitch up from south to north. did not take Moses 8036. I stayed east with a group going south to north. give space, very large boulder 3/4 way up the hill that you need to negotiate. The climb is a 6 to 7 out of 10. Th3 descent from south to north wasn't bad but still a 25⁰ angle. the rest of the trail is pretty easy but if you dont like steep climbs and 18⁰-20⁰ roll angles you might not like it! Great view at the top! Definitely had some adadrenaline going up for sure!

We had a group of 12 vehicles doing Moses Hill the day after we had rain. A few muddy areas that vehicles had gone through over the last few weeks and really dug up. Looks like some had even tried to bypass these areas, making the trail wider. Overall, though, the trail is in good condition. Moses Hill does have one really nice, rocky climb that we aired down for...that has a nice obstacle on the way up. If you are up for a challenge, this could be it.

Halfway through this trail you have a choice of the east or west trail. PLEASE be aware that the east trail (which is the one routed in green on this map) has a VERY ROCKY SND STEEP HILL on the south end. 3 of our 4 rigs could not make this climb. There are very large loose rocks and the south end of the hill has a huge boulder in the middle you will need to negotiate around. The west trail section makes this a 3/10 trail. The east trail section makes it a 6/10.
