Trail Overview
Iceman is a 6+ rated down-and-back trail, with many optional sections along the way. Iceman is known for its tall canyon sides and vast plant life. However, this is no plant life tour. As you shift to 4-low, you will drop off the first dried-up waterfall, starting a day full of rock crawling. Iceman will push the limits of a factory trail-rated vehicle. With plenty of opportunities to learn the capabilities of your rig, Iceman will leave a smile on anyone's face! As you scrape your skids down the canyon, stop for lunch at the very bottom turnaround. The bottom used to be open to motor vehicles, but has since closed. A Forest Service carsonite marks the end of the trail. The climb out of the canyon provides a whole different rock crawling experience. Be prepared with water and food for the day. This route is an intermediate route, so some experience in rock crawling is recommended. The local 4x4 clubs Rushmore Rock Crawlers, Black Hills Jeeps, and Black Hills 4 Wheelers are great points of contact should you want more trail-related info. Always follow the Tread Lightly guidelines and help us keep our rock crawling routes open to all.
Difficulty
This trail is a down-and-back. Expect large boulders, 2- to 3-foot drop-offs, and rock shelf climbs. Body damage is possible.
History
The Black Hills 4 Wheelers can be credited with opening this trail. Roughly 15 years ago, there was a shelf road called "Hangman," however, this has since been closed to motorized vehicles. "Hangman" is now a popular hiking trail, so hikers are frequently at the bottom. Remember, you represent all the 4x4 community, so please be respectful of the multiple types of recreation this trail is used for, including hikers.
