Calamity Canyon

Calamity Canyon is an intense, highly technical rock crawling trail in the Black Hills National Forest designed specifically for experienced drivers in built four-wheel-drive vehicles and capable SxSs looking for a relentless challenge. Spanning approximately 3.5 miles near the historic town of Galena, South Dakota, this trail serves up continuous, hard-hitting obstacles from the moment tires drop in until the very end. With elevation ranging between 4,276 and 4,696 feet, offroaders can expect a grueling series of large boulders, steep ledges, and tight off-camber squeezes that require high-clearance, front and rear lockers, and a reliable winch. Because of the route’s unforgiving terrain and frequent technical obstacles, a spotter is highly recommended for all but the most seasoned rock crawlers to navigate the narrow lines safely. Beyond the demanding driving, the trail offers scenic canyon views and a unique cave opening along the route that provides an excellent opportunity for foot exploration. The trail's primary surface consists of rugged rock slabs and loose dirt, which can become exceptionally slick and hazardous during wet conditions or early spring snowmelt, making late spring through autumn the best time to attempt the run. Navigating Calamity Canyon requires not only robust vehicle protection like skid plates and rock sliders but also a solid understanding of vehicle placement to avoid body damage. The route loops back near Park Creek and connects with surrounding Forest Service roads, allowing drivers to pair this extreme challenge with tamer scenic drives through the ponderosa pines of the Black Hills.
