Trail Overview

Bulldog is an exceptionally scenic, beginner-friendly trail in the Black Hills National Forest that is perfect for offroaders wanting to experience stunning autumn colors and sweeping mountain vistas without navigating difficult obstacles. Winding through the hills southwest of Sturgis, this route climbs steadily through dense pine forests and groves of aspen, offering panoramic views of nearby landmarks like Deadman Mountain. The terrain consists of a dirt and gravel two-track surface that is highly manageable for stock four-wheel drive vehicles, high-clearance SUVs, and SxSs. While the path presents minimal technical difficulty with its low rating, the primary challenge is navigating narrow shelf road sections where meeting oncoming traffic requires careful driving and finding wide spots to pass. Conveniently located near Interstate 90, the trail serves as an excellent warm-up route or a gateway to the broader forest service road network of the area. As you travel along the ridgelines, you will experience steady climbs and descents that reveal expansive views of South Dakota's rugged landscape. This route is especially popular during late summer and autumn when the changing foliage paints the surrounding valleys in brilliant shades of gold. With its easy access and forgiving terrain, this trail provides an enjoyable and relaxed day of cruising for drivers of all skill levels.

Trail is a bit Rocky at the beginning of the north side but 33" tires would do just fine. We did turn around before the peak of the trail. I am not a person for hights so I got a bit nerve-racked seeing the trail further ahead. If you are fine with heights you will like this trail. Unfortunately my nerves & anxiety got the best of me.

Trail ran good, due to the tree cover over parts of the trail some spots were much wetter than others. Overall the trail is in good shape with not too much rutting. 4x4 and 33s certainly help on sections of the trail.
