Trail Overview
Tin Shanty Road is a seasonal access road generally open from early October to early February (check PA DCNR website for dates). This is an out-and-back adventure, and a nice drive with plenty of opportunity to view wildlife and some beautiful areas of Sproul State Forest. Expect the road to be rutted and muddy, and unmaintained, especially in snow.
Difficulty
Tin Shanty Road is an unmaintained road in Sproul State Forest that is primarily rocky dirt. Expect snow in winter, ruts, mud, and puddles in wet seasons. The trail will typically be more washed and rutted as the route progresses. Past the fork, expect more mud puddles and overgrown vegetation. Beyond the "tin shanty," the trail becomes extremely overgrown and only continues a short distance further. There is room to turn around at the very end.
History
The trail is aptly named, as there is an actual "tin shanty" at the bottom. Unlike many other state forest hunt camps, this is built almost entirely out of galvanized metal "tin".
