Trail Overview
Spectacle Gap is an inviting, scenic out-and-back drive through the Tuscarora State Forest in Pennsylvania, ideal for beginners, families, and anyone looking for a relaxed mountain climb with stunning forest views. Spanning approximately 4.4 miles, this route climbs steadily from an elevation of 997 feet up to a maximum elevation of 2,201 feet, offering a cumulative elevation gain of over 1,240 feet. The trail is composed of a well-maintained gravel surface, making it easily navigable for stock high-clearance vehicles, four-wheel-drive rigs, and SxSs. Along the drive, visitors wind through dense forests, which offer a peaceful wilderness experience that becomes especially spectacular during the peak autumn foliage.
At the summit, travelers will find Campsite 009, which sits on the historic site of the Shade Mountain Fire Tower that was constructed in 1935 and dismantled in the 2010s. This campsite can be reserved with a permit from the managing forest district, offering a remote overnight option with panoramic potential. Because cellular reception is highly limited or completely absent throughout this section of the Tuscarora State Forest, downloading offline maps prior to departure is critical. With a technical rating of 1, the trail features no major obstacles, but drivers should remain mindful of seasonal conditions such as winter snow and spring mud that can affect traction on the gravel.
History
The Shade Mountain Fire Tower was constructed in 1935 and torn down in the 2010s. The site of the former tower is now used for Campsite 009.
Access Description
Campsite 009 (formerly the Shade Mountain Fire Tower site) requires a permit for overnight stays, which must be obtained from the managing forest district. Due to very poor or nonexistent cellular service in the Tuscarora State Forest, offline maps should be downloaded before departing.
