Trail Overview

McVeytown Road is an in-and-out trail leading to an exit on the pavement. This trail is a typical state forest graded gravel road within Tuscarora State Forest. It comes off a main OnX Offroad mapped trail called Licking Creek Road. This trail has an abundance of oak trees and pine trees, providing ample shelter for wildlife and a surplus of food. There is a wonderful scenic site of the towns below, and on a clear day, you can see the outer mountain silhouette. The trail is easily traveled in the summer months but may become more difficult in winter due to snow and ice.

History

The "Father of Forestry," Dr. Joseph T. Rothrock, a conservationist born in McVeytown in 1839, spearheaded the rescue of PA timberlands. As the first leader of the PA Dept of Forestry, he prompted the state to purchase depleted lands, which eventually formed the Tuscarora and Rothrock State forests.
