Trail Overview
Broad Mountain Road runs along the ridge of Broad Mountain in the Bear Valley Tract of Buchanan State Forest. It offers several views of the valley to the west, including a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources-designated vista, a short, rocky hike up from the north end of the trail. The view from site BV004 on the east side of the road, if it's unoccupied, is probably about as good as the designated vista if you want to avoid the rocky hike. The road is generally well-maintained gravel and is an easy scenic drive. There are a large number of communications towers near the north end of the trail. This road provides access to several dispersed motorized camp sites that can be reserved on Reserve America.
History
Broad Mountain and the surrounding roads were part of the lands acquired by the Commonwealth in the early 1900s after local farms and lumber companies sold off cut-over tracts, enabling large-scale reforestation and recreation management.
