Trail Overview

Wheeler Point Lookout Trail is a 0.4-mile out-and-back trail climbing to the old Wheeler Point Lookout. Despite its short length, this trail features an intimidating hill climb followed by large rocks in the roadway that will slow most vehicles to a crawl. Only confident drivers with capable vehicles should attempt the climb; those without proper vehicles should opt to walk to the lookout. Riders who brave the climb are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Ochoco Mountains to the south and the Umatilla National Forest to the northeast. Wheeler Point Lookout Trail is accessible year-round, and all OHVs (non-street legal) require an Oregon Parks ATV permit.

Difficulty

The primary obstacle on this trail is the initial hill climb. 4WD, high clearance, and a minimum of aggressive 33-inch tires are required to confidently tackle this climb, which is narrow, deeply rutted, and features large roots to climb over. A rear locker might be helpful as well. Once past the hill climb, the constant large rocks in the roadway make for a slow ascent toward the lookout. Weather conditions such as rain and snow may greatly increase difficulty. A chainsaw or other equipment for clearing fallen trees is highly recommended.
