Trail Overview

Accessed directly off Forest Road 48N14Y near West Sterling Mountain, West Sterling Mountain Spur A (FS 48N14YA) extends as a quiet, little-traveled out-and-back forest spur. The pathway descends beneath a shady woodland canopy of Douglas firs, incense cedars, and thick hillside vegetation within the Klamath National Forest. Backcountry explorers and campers primarily venture down this secluded track to access a charming, primitive dispersed campsite tucked away at the dead end, while enjoying quiet access toward the broader Sterling Mountain ridgeline. There are no formal footpath entryways located directly on this spur, though nearby trails in the Sterling Mountain area attract hikers and nature lovers. The driving surface consists of loose gravel and dirt, with an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Stepping down a steady 3% to 5% grade, the route narrows as foliage sweeps in from both sides, requiring attention to overhead limb clearance. The trail comes to a firm finish at the campsite turnaround, where a large stump and Forest Service log barrier prevent further vehicle travel.

Difficulty

This short downhill spur features a straightforward dirt and loose gravel tread. Advanced off-road hazards like deep mud trenches, steep ledge drops, or off-camber rock steps are completely absent. The primary terrain challenge comes from scattered, basketball-sized rocks that have fallen from the uphill cut bank onto the travel lane. Additionally, tight side brush and low overhead branches limit clearance along the narrowest stretches. Steering around loose stones at a slow, controlled crawling speed preserves tire traction and prevents undercarriage contact. Standard factory ground clearance is fully sufficient to navigate the slope and maneuver easily at the terminal campsite.
