Three Springs Dead End

Three Springs Dead End is a short but highly technical out-and-back trail in southeastern Oregon designed for experienced four-wheel-drive enthusiasts seeking a rocky, slow-going challenge. Spanning approximately 1.6 miles, this route climbs from an elevation of 5,557 feet to 5,856 feet, showcasing a cumulative elevation gain of 312 feet with a maximum gradient of 8.9 degrees. Almost immediately after starting, drivers encounter the trail's primary obstacle: a tight, deep rock transition and a very off-camber gatekeeper section that tests vehicle articulation. The remainder of the route requires careful tire placement to navigate large boulders, deep washouts, and off-camber stretches without sustaining vehicle damage. The trail follows Three Springs Road through a remote, rugged desert landscape near the Donner und Blitzen River, ending at a fenced-off three springs corral. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs are highly recommended to tackle the rugged rock and dirt surface safely. While there are a few flat spots suitable for primitive dispersed camping along the route, none of them feature established fire rings. Offroaders should plan for self-sufficiency, as cellular service is extremely unreliable, with only a single bar of Verizon LTE fading in and out along the trail.
