Trail Overview

This road is in decent shape but gets very corrugated and deteriorates through the year. There are few obstacles, but speed can make many of the corners dangerous, and you'll also find many steep grades. There are areas with reliable cell phone service. There are a lot of people in this area. It is by no means 'off-grid,' but it is easy to access remote areas from this road. There are many signs, so finding points of interest is easy. Many people enjoy viewing wild horses on the southern half of the loop.

This is an easy road to drive. The only dangers are speed, other motorists, and a few long grades.

Gates are open and no problem doing the entire loop in 2wd. About a dozen vehicles on the road.

The trail is very well maintained, enough for any 2WD to do without trouble. The gate is closed at the 23 mile marker from the south entrance, making the loop impossible to do in whole. The peak is not accessible from the south entrance.

The road is not really a trail but a very well maintained gravel road that is constantly frequented by normal cars. At the moment it is still barricaded at the 24mile mark at the three way junction to the eastern outlook and, the southern part of the loop and the peak part of the road. The peak is still accessible

Trail is closed approximately 24 miles from Frenchglen, due to a rockslide that happened more than a year ago. Much of the trail, and offshoots are still accessible but you cannot complete the full Steens Loop Trail.
