Trail Overview

Sourgrass Ridge offers an easy, accessible gravel route through the scenic Siuslaw National Forest, making it perfect for beginners and stock vehicles looking for an entry-level escape. Stretching approximately 4.9 miles, this heavily traveled corridor features smooth gravel sections that allow for comfortable passage, though drivers must remain highly alert for oncoming traffic traveling at higher speeds around blind corners. The route winds through dense Pacific Northwest timberlands, offering a classic forest experience without requiring high clearance or specialized equipment. Navigating this road involves a gentle climb, starting at an elevation of 443 feet and reaching a peak of 983 feet with a total elevation gain of 712 feet. Four-wheel-drive is not required under dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for passenger cars, crossover SUVs, and SxSs alike. However, because the route is not winter-maintained, snow and seasonal wet weather can significantly increase difficulty. A single, primitive roadside pull-off offers space for one vehicle to camp, though it lacks a fire ring and requires complete self-reliance.
