Reed Rock

Reed Rock is an ideal route for offroaders seeking a scenic, moderately challenging drive through Oregon's high desert near Christmas Valley, offering striking volcanic vistas and close-up views of impressive rock formations. Extending just over 5.5 miles, this trail climbs approximately 210 feet, reaching a peak elevation of around 4,530 feet near the base of Reed Rock itself. The trail features a primarily dirt and rock surface with sharp, embedded stones and narrow segments that require high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles or SxSs. While the technical rating is a moderate 3, drivers should remain alert for tight clearances and sharp rocks that can threaten sidewalls, especially along the lesser-traveled stretches. The surrounding landscape is dominated by ancient juniper trees, expansive sagebrush, and dramatic geological features like nearby Randobaughs Volcano. Offroaders can expect to encounter local wildlife, including mule deer and pronghorn antelope, making it a great destination for nature lovers. When rain or snow is present, the dirt turns to thick, slippery mud, which can significantly increase the difficulty and require recovery gear. Multiple dispersed camping areas are scattered along the route, providing excellent opportunities to set up camp under the starry desert sky. A short, optional hike to the summit of Reed Rock awards visitors with panoramic views of the Christmas Lake Valley, making this a highly rewarding destination.
