Trail Overview

Owyhee Oxbow Basin is a rugged, 3.6-mile trail suited for remote adventurers seeking stunning canyon views and challenging backcountry terrain. This rocky and rutted dirt road climbs steeply from the Owyhee River into Oxbow Basin, gaining approximately 1,211 feet of elevation with a maximum gradient of 19 degrees. Navigating this trail requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or capable SxSs to handle the rocky terrain and steep climbs, which reach a peak elevation of 3,438 feet. The route serves as a gateway to the remote backcountry and several Wilderness Study Areas along the western side of the Owyhee Reservoir and Canyonlands. Due to the high silica content in the regional soil, the track turns into extremely fine talc dust when dry and transforms into an incredibly slick, clay-like mud when wet that can easily strand vehicles. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient by carrying extra fuel, plenty of water, and spare tires, as there is virtually no traffic or cell service in this highly isolated wilderness.
