Trail Overview
Mount Hebo Road offers an easy and scenic drive through the Siuslaw National Forest, making it perfect for beginners, families, and offroaders looking for a relaxed journey with sweeping forest views. Stretching approximately 16.4 miles, this gravel and natural mixed-surface route winds through dense timber, climbing from a minimum elevation of 1,361 feet up to a peak of 3,124 feet. Offroaders in standard four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs will find the route highly accessible, though it is important to watch out for large potholes, deep water puddles, and slick, muddy sections during rainy periods. The path features a cumulative elevation gain of 1,620 feet and an elevation loss of 3,155 feet, offering a dynamic but gentle elevation profile.
While the majority of the drive is straightforward, one particular section becomes notably steep and tight, which makes towing trailers highly discouraged. Visitors can access the Pioneer-Indian Hiking Trail #1300 along the route, adding an excellent hiking option to the trip. For those looking to shoot or camp, there is a large dispersed camping spot located near a prominent gravel pit popular for recreational target shooting, though travelers must obey signs designating a three-mile stretch where camping is strictly prohibited. The route is not maintained during the winter season, making summer and fall the ideal times to explore this scenic corridor.
