Trail Overview
All things considered, McKay Butte is an easy climb. A standard four-wheel drive or a determined Subaru can make it without any issues (be aware of Murphy's Law). The climb is somewhat steep at the end, and you may begin to doubt that you will make it, however, it is short-lived. Then you're at the summit, and it's quite the summit. The view to the west is unobstructed and makes for an epic sunset view as the forest surrounds the plateau. The campsite area is immense and provides plenty of room for kids to play or multiple vehicle parties. We hit the site in October with snow on the ground. The temps dropped quickly. I really think this is a good trip for later in the season if you are looking for solitude. The sun will rise over an unnamed mountain to the east and warm everything back up. Push forward.
