Trail Overview
Haystack Overlook is an easy, scenic route ideal for beginners, families, and offroaders looking for a relaxed drive with stunning panoramic views of the Crooked River National Grasslands and Haystack Reservoir. Starting near Madras, Oregon, this 10.7-mile track combines well-maintained gravel roads and mild dirt two-track, making it accessible to most four-wheel-drive vehicles, high-clearance rigs, and SxSs. The route gently climbs from an elevation of 2,499 feet up to 3,306 feet, winding through a beautiful high-desert landscape dotted with sagebrush and juniper trees. A short spur trail leads to the namesake overlook, offering a perfect spot to pull over, snap photos of the reservoir below, and take in the expansive Central Oregon scenery.
As you navigate the trail, expect to encounter multiple cattle gates, which must be kept closed behind you to respect active grazing areas. The terrain is mostly flat and rated at a very approachable difficulty level, meaning advanced technical driving skills are not required, though standard caution for unpaved surfaces is advised. Because this area serves as a critical winter habitat for large game, the roads are subject to a seasonal closure from December 1st through March 31st each year. Visitors during the open season should plan ahead for warm, dry summer conditions or potential mud in the shoulder seasons, ensuring a fun and responsible offroad excursion.
