Trail Overview
This forest road is mostly gravel and smooth surfaced. The road travels through dense forest, but in sections it opens up and you get amazing views of Mt. Hood. As you go further up the trail you will get views of Mount Defiance, which is the tallest peak on the Columbia River Gorge. The road dead ends at Black Lake where there is parking for 6 to 8 vehicles, 5 tent camping sites around the lake, and an A-frame vault toilet. Black Lake is approximately 4 acres big with a max depth of 8 feet. The trail used to continue past the lake, but it is now blocked off by big boulders due to heavy washout and slides past the lake. Any vehicle could traverse this trail, however the area gets a good amount of snow and that makes high clearance 4x4 a must in the winter months.
