Trail Overview
Vinton County Tunnels Tour Part 1 is an easy, scenic 15.3-mile off-road route through the historic Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio. Beginning at the Lake Hope State Park Lodge, this counterclockwise journey winds south through Vinton County's dense woodlands on primarily unpaved and gravel roads. Rated at a technical difficulty of 2, the drive features minor challenges like steep hill climbs and soft shoulders, making it accessible to most stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles or standard SUVs in dry conditions.
The route highlights the area's rich coal-mining and railroad history, passing near the historic Campbell Tunnel and Zaleski State Forest. It can be completed in approximately six hours, with opportunities for gas and food in nearby communities. This segment also connects to the Zaleski Vinton County Tunnel Loop West for an extended adventure exploring regional ghost towns, covered bridges, and abandoned train tunnels.
