Parts of the trail were super rough and muddy with some deep ruts on steep hills. We made it through though

If you decide to take the straight path on what I believe is James run going to Brady road donโt go from james up unless you are high clearance 4x4. I have done it once when dry and was still a wild ride. I have though taken Brady road down to James meany of times you gotta be careful at the very start not to fall in the ruts gotta stick the high side I fell in ruts once made it out thankfully out that angel was wild! I will get some trail photos next time Iโm out that way I never think to take any pics of the crazy stuff always to focused. 2024 Obx added squatch suspension with 2inch spacers, dv8 mto v2 front bumper with 12k badlands syn rope, Havco tire hinge and lights. Icy and snow covered. We took the james rd shortcut trail which had no tracks from anyone else going through. We made it with 2 gladiators and 34" tires but it was butt puckering not gonna lie. Very deep ruts but you can straddle the worst ones if your careful. We had a blast. You won't have any cell service. We did not have a winch and were able ti get through but probably would be best to travel with someone who has a winch or some sort of recovery. There are steep hills on that short cut trail so be careful

The portion of this trail near the fire tower is rather tame, a wide, hard road. The North-South portion is a complely different animal, especially when wet. The beaver dam is cool, followed by steep inclines heading south, bush closing in from above and deep ruts. 33's barely cleared it. Pinstriping is going to happen, I wouldn't attempt this in a large vehicle. Overall a very lovely, scenic trail, one I'd definitely recommend.

this was the first trail I've found, around here, that was actually fun. Started at RT 595 and the trail is smooth gravel, but when you turn right at the lake it's got a water crossing (beaver dam is cool) and it gets very tight and rutted. Actual off road! spent 2 hours back there exploring.

similar to the description. My tacoma fit fine, but definitely got some new pinstripes striping. If you're worried about scratches DO NOT do this trail. It's unavoidable. Nothing difficult. I hit the trail in 4 low but probably didn't need it. Water crossing is very shallow, could see it being a tough one after a heavy rain. Rutted portion definitely requires ground clearance. 33's and a 2.5 inch lift cleared it fine. I wouldn't risk much lower vehicles. Fun quick trail.

For the most part the trail has some decent ruts and can be very sloppy. I rate most of the trail 2-3 and one section in the first pic is a 5 because you will need clearance. I am 34โs to give you reference and that is going up the technical section.

Absolutely NOT a 3 or 4 rated trail.... took my power wagon with 35s up this trail and made it a mile deep before approaching an extremely iced over hill with ruts 2 feet deep on the right side. There's a nice little "wheel wash" at the beginning of the trail :-), would not recommend doing this in anything big, maybe something small with 44s on it

Fire tower is fenced off and cannot be climbed. Road is very easy and can be done with any vehicle

Large Piles of Asphalt Millings Along the trail. Some have been used to fill wash outs. Some are obstructing the road there is a bypass around these. Some areas there is no room to pass be prepared to run into locals on SXS.

This trail would have definitely been more fun while muddy, it was bone dry when I went. Do not even attempt the north part of the trail, it's too narrow for a truck and you will get plenty of pin stripes. Go onto dawley cemetery once you reach it, don't try and continue on James road!
