Trail Overview
Coming up onto Pine Grove Road (FS 156), located off of Catfish Lake Road, you will be met with a gravel road that stretches 3.1 miles in the eastern section of the Croatan National Forest. It is smaller in width than most of the trails in the Croatan area, but you will still have room to pull to the side if incoming traffic appears from the opposite direction. With enough visibility and far flat stretches, you can spot wildlife ranging from anywhere to waterfowl to black bears. Toward the end, you will come to a large area where the road offers daytime lounging or nighttime primitive camping with no outlet.
Difficulty
This section remains primarily flat and relatively even from start to finish, with no significant elevation changes, steep grades, or challenging sections to navigate. Along the route, there are some areas wide enough for vehicles to comfortably pull off to the side, making it easy to yield to traffic along the way. So as a result, this trail is accessible to a wide variety of vehicles for any occasion.
