Trail Overview

Portsmouth Island requires a private vehicle ferry from Morris Marina to access and reservation in advance is necessary. A permit is required to drive on the beach and can be obtained through the Cape Lookout National Seashore, National Parks website. Once you get to the island, you have 20 miles of beach to ride and unlimited camping spots. The trail is completely sand so airing down your tires is required. You may encounter obstacles buried in the sand. Parts of the trail are only accessible at low tide-the ferry service will provide you with a tide chart.

Great beach to drive up and down and hangout and fish. Just make sure you watch the signs and sea turtle nest. The beach is pretty easy to get down for 4x4 and clearance vehicles, just make sure to air down to 18-20psi. Camping can be done along the dunes just watch out for the green head flys.
