Trail Overview

Chestnut Mountain Road - FS 198 is a seasonally open (9/01 to 12/31) maintained gravel road in the Pisgah Game Land that most vehicles can travel with no issue, but at the end there is an extension that goes downhill to the Mountain to Seas hiking trail that had just been cleared, where there were a few places with soft ground, but it didn't require 4x4. There were a couple of Mountain Bikers traveling this road, so just be aware that you may encounter traffic while in the area. The road is mostly one lane, with areas to pass if needed

Difficulty

I rated this road a 2 due to the extension that was a little less maintained at the end, but it can be traveled without going down that section, which would otherwise make it a 1 rating
