Trail Overview
Bear Branch is a moderately technical out-and-back dirt trail accessed from Fed Fork. The route begins with a water crossing that uses deteriorated concrete entry and exit points, immediately adding some variation before the trail transitions into a narrower dirt track. Turnaround opportunities are extremely limited until the end of the route, so drivers should be prepared to commit once they enter. Throughout the trail, drivers will encounter scattered ruts, mud holes, protruding rocks, and minor off-camber sections that require careful tire placement. A dirt-covered log crossing adds another obstacle, and downed trees may occasionally block or narrow the route. Weather can change the character of Bear Branch significantly, with wet conditions making the trail much muddier and increasing traction challenges. The route ends at a gated turnaround, where drivers can safely reverse direction and retrace the trail back to Fed Fork.
Difficulty
Bear Branch is rated a 3 due to its uneven dirt surface, recurring ruts and mud holes, protruding rocks, water crossing, and minor off-camber sections. The deteriorated concrete at the water crossing and the dirt-covered log crossing add distinct obstacles, while wet weather can make traction substantially more difficult. The trail does not feature sustained large ledges or severe grades, but the combination of muddy terrain, uneven surfaces, and limited turnaround opportunities creates a consistent step up from a Level 2 route. Overall, the sustained experience aligns with a Level 3 trail featuring rutted dirt, loose rock, mud, and obstacles up to roughly 12 inches.
