Trail Overview

This is an easy route that connects I-25 at the top of La Bajada Hill with Highway 14 at the Village of Cerrillos. For many years, there was a well-marked turnoff to Waldo on I-25. But where is Waldo and what is Waldo? All that remains of the ghost town is a cement foundation along the railroad tracks and a canyon that bears the Waldo name. The town was named for Henry L. Waldo, a New Mexico territorial jurist in the 1870s. There was coal mining in the area that shut down in 1906. There were also 15 coke ovens along the railroad tracks that supplied the trains. Coke is a type of fuel that burns hotter than either bituminous or anthracite coal.

We kicked off the drive on Where’s Waldo Trail, which turned out to be a very easy and accessible route. The trail is mostly smooth with a few washboarded sections, but nothing technical or challenging. In fact, nearly any passenger car could handle it without issue—we even saw a Honda Civic fly past us at around 50 mph, which says a lot about how mellow the terrain is. Because of how easy and scenic the route is, the trail was fairly busy. It’s clearly a popular way to travel toward Madrid, offering a relaxed drive and a convenient connection between areas. Overall, this is a safe, low-stress trail that’s great for casual exploring, scenic cruising, or anyone just looking for an easy route into town. We stopped off in Madrid and grabbed burgers at the Mine Shaft Tavern—highly recommended, great burgers and a perfect mid-trail break. On the way back, we connected onto Wild Horse Trail, which turned the outing into a nice, fun little loop and made for an easy, enjoyable day on the trail.

its not a bad trail at all. When you get to Devils Throne it is a very steep climb or decent depending which way you are going, but it is maybe half a mile long. Watch for small sections that have been washed away from rain. I was going south and stayed in 2wd all the way. Going north you might need 4wd low.

BMWR1300GS, first intentional dirt trail, I'm a beginner ADV rider and had no problem. I rode over to the Turquoise trail and into Santa Fe. Very enjoyable. I did meet up with a bull and cow. They walked off the trail and let me pass...lol .. thank God

Gentle ascent from Cerrillos climbs to a rolling wash covered plain. Road is wide and well maintained, a few of the low spots are prone to erosion but generally not a problem. The Galisteo Creek and Amtrak railroad is in sight for the first half, then you cross under the Railrunner commuter tracks before ascending La Bajada plateau and reaching the interstate.
