Trail Overview

Twin Hills Loop runs between the base of the Twin Hill and Cerro Rito and offers features for the most well-equipped 4WD and 4X4 vehicles to enjoy. Most of the trail provides room to pass traffic if necessary, with only a few sections being more narrow due to either brush or natural terrain changes. The surface of the trail changes several times from start to finish and features everything from larger loose rocks to soft dirt and a couple of small sandy washes. In addition to the multiple terrain variations, there are several sections of deeper rutting with some being off-camber up to 12 degrees. At the northeast section of the loop, if run in a counter-clockwise direction, there is a drop that is just over 15" on a slightly steeper downhill grade. Just after the drop, there is some rutting that continues on the downhill grade that is off-camber to the driver-side which is primarily loose dirt and rocks. If the loop is driven in a clockwise direction the obstacles listed will be on a steeper grade ascent and 4X4 is recommended. There are several short steeper grade climbs and descents over loose rocks through the entirety of the trail that will be best driven with a 4WD or 4X4 vehicle. Cell service is moderately strong through the entirety of the trail with only a few sections having weaker service. The views and features of this trail are wide and vary with each turn and change in direction.

Difficulty

Drivers will encounter sections of larger loose rocks, deep off-camber rutting, steep grades on loose rocky surfaces and low-lying sandy washes. There is one obstacle that will either be a drop or climb depending on direction choice that is over a large drop on an off-camber section of the trail.

BEWARE!!! I've completed several trails with a "4" difficulty rating in my stock 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X, but this was leagues more difficult than the rest. I've never received so much as an undercarriage scratch on any other "4", including Tijeras and Cedro Peak, but this trail was terrifying and resulted in heavy undercarriage scraping and a dented front bumper from an unavoidable head-on deep rut approximately 3 feet in depth. Stock off-roading orientated trucks should definitely not attempt in my opinion, but this is sure to be a blast in a very capable rig with high ground clearance. When going counterclockwise, one section early on is incredibly off-camber. I spent a while studying this section and planning my line, and I firmly believe I took the best line possible. Even still, I reached 28° passenger side up and nearly flipped my truck. I have no doubt this would have been a blast in a more capable rig!
