Trail Overview

San Luis Road to the Guadalupe Ruins is a fairly well-maintained dirt road, although there may be some ruts and sandy portions depending on the time of year. The 20-mile drive will provide opportunities to admire the high desert landscape and various geologic rock formations. There are no obstacles on this road, but you will encounter two arroyo crossings that are steep (pictures provided). During dry conditions, the road is easily passable with a high-clearance 2WD or 4WD vehicle. During wet conditions, the road may become impassable due to slick mud and several arroyo crossings. Parking at the ruins is at the base of the hill. Take time to read the information at the trailhead.

Last 2 miles, road is washed out. Barely passable and only in 4x4 with good clearance and tires

Super easy dirt road that most cars could drive if you watch tire placement near ruts. If wet, it will be very slippy and not a good idea for even 4x4s as NM dirt roads get soft fast and a vehicle can easily slip off the side where tires can't find solid traction. Low water crossings will be extremely dangerous if water is flowing and if rain is on the way it could make getting back north across low spots impossible. Limited mobile phone coverage.
