Trail Overview

Parsons is a connecting spur that runs from the end of Nogal Canyon/FSR-400 to Bonito Canyon to the south. The surface is a combination of dirt and rock and appears to be very well maintained. The trail should be easily accessible by most vehicles as there are no large obstacles, however, any 2WD vehicles may have difficulties during wet weather. The road is primarily single-vehicle-wide with only a few small areas wide enough to pass if needed. There are a few very tight switchback style turns that vehicles with longer trailers may find difficult, as well as some short steeper grades. Cell service is limited throughout the area due to the surrounding hills and thick trees. There are multiple hiking trails in the area and dispersed camping is permitted. Views are primarily limited with only a couple of small areas where the trees open up and give a view of the surrounding area.

Difficulty

There are no major obstacles along the trail. 2WD vehicles may have issues during wet weather as the road surface is dirt and rock and will become muddy. Trailered vehicles should take note of the tight switchback turns.

This is actually 2 trails in 1 FSR108 & FSR400. Both beginning and ending no matter which side you start on are easy well maintained roads with houses and cabins on them. But once you start to climb the road shale gets loose I was in a F250 SD with 4 high engaged for most of the climb. The switchbacks were tight for me but with a little finesse was easy enough. Probably would not do this in a 2 wheel drive if the roads are wet the rocks are slick and the ledges are steep and it’s a long way down. But it a very beautiful drive saw some turkeys and mule deer along the way. Watch out for motorcycles especially near all the switchbacks neither one of you will see each other until your next to each other. All in all it was a fun beautiful drive at 5-10mph on a day off.
