Trail Overview

Pacheco Canyon is a great easy trail near the Santa Fe Ski area, just outside Santa Fe, NM. The trail can be run in either direction, but the views heading downhill into Tesuque Village are amazing. There are several great places to camp along the side roads for this trail, so take extra time to explore if you're up for the weekend.

Difficulty

It's a well-graded forest road with a good amount of usage, but there are a couple of bumpy and rocky areas that may not be suitable for passenger cars. Some areas could become slippery during heavy rains.

Started at Tesuque Village Rd. Rd was dry and rough in a few places. Never used 4 x4, just higher clearance was nice. Beautiful fall colors. Ended at 475 with no issues.

Road was in good shape with some shallow ruts, a few water filled holes (1 ft deep). The lower end had some rocky areas where it was a little washed out. 2Hi took care of most of it. Met three vehicles and a few mountain bikes.

Lovely trail through the canyon with lots of different foliage. Big ole Petunia the Sprinter van had no trouble. It rained for part of the trip and conditions quickly got a bit muddy. Was a nice relaxing ride

Easy ride with some areas of mild clearance challenges due to rutting. A few puddles left from the previous nights rain, but didn’t an issue.

The sign says it is closed from November 15 through April 15, but it was still closed today on April 20. A native man happened to be there and let us through the gate (part of the road goes through Tesuque Pueblo land). The road was perfectly fine. Hardly any snow left, a few trees had fallen over the winter and are on or near the road, and the lower part of the road had some rockier parts, but nothing too bad. The gate heading to the ski basin was also closed. Short trip, but it was nice to get out. Great sunset on the way back.

The lower portion of the trail towards Pojoaque had a closed gate as well as some melting snow and ice. Past the gate looked to possibly have more snow cover.
