Trail Overview
Gallegos Trail is an intermediate dirt bike route in the Carson National Forest, full of chunky rock challenges. The south end of the trail starts directly off of Highway 518 with no parking area. It side-hills along a dry hillside in scrub oak, with a rocky switchback obstacle right away, with an embedded boulder on the inside turn. As it continues climbing, it goes through a long rock garden full of embedded boulders and ledges up to 2 feet tall, with uneven gaps and holes, on a steep slope. The rock garden seems to keep going for a very long segment, and it will be very challenging for inexperienced riders. The last half mile on the northern end is easier, with fewer rocks, but frequent slick roots. It’s a wider corridor through aspen groves and pine trees, and it steeply climbs up to the intersection with Trail 182 up a dirt path with some ruts. This trail is open to motorized use from 3/15 to 11/15.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate route due to a technical rock garden with tall boulders and ledges on a steep slope for an extended segment that riders will go up from south to north. This type of terrain beats you up, is very physically demanding, and is not beginner-friendly. There are challenges all throughout the short route.
