History

The Tyrone mining district is the second largest copper deposit in New Mexico. Native Americans initially mined turquoise in the area around 600 AD. Underground mining started in the early 1860s and the current mode of mining, open-pit stripping, began in the late 1960s. Parts of the open pits are currently being reclaimed.
