Trail Overview

This trail is about 6 miles long right outside of Oro Grande New Mexico. There are many trails in the area that lead to old prospected mines. Many of the mines are closed off but a few are open and should be explored with precaution. On this trail, you will encounter a variety of terrains. This is a desert terrain that takes you through the mount. The initial road is well taken care of but once you start heading towards the mountains it does go through multiple washouts. There will be multiple places where it does have 12 into 18 in washouts and boulders around 12 in tall. This trail is open all year around and there is plenty of BLM land to spend the night on. This is a very arid environment thus during the summer it does reach over 100 degrees and not much shade is available. When it rains watch out for flash floods in the area. The closest gas station is the 1 in Oro Grande and has plenty of snacks and an air/water machine($1) to get small supplies and fuel up. This trail is very scenic and crosses through a mountain that was carved out to get a train through (the cutout) in the old prospecting days.

Difficulty

This trail is not difficult but does have some washouts that get rutted out by the rain and can become difficult to pass. There is an area where the rocks and ledges are 12 in and loose rocks are prominent. It does have one area where the washouts have created an off-camber section in the road and made it a little more challenging but adds to the experience.

History

This whole area is full of old mines where they would process and extract turquoise and copper. The reason there is a cut out in the mountain is due to the old prospectors have difficulty having to take the processed materials out of there. Thus they cut out a piece of the mountain to be able to run a train through the area and connect to the Union Pacific trains. This area was also mined prior to that by the native Americans for the Turquois found in the area. There is still active mines that run in the are but are seasonal.

This trail is very deceptive. When you first start it’s very easy, just a dirt/rocky road that doesn’t require 4wd. However, the deeper you go it suddenly gets very bad. I was in a stock Mojave and fortunately, I wasn’t riding alone so I had assistance from spotter who went through sudden on-the-job training. The washouts are pretty challenging but there are work-arounds for some and the others you just have to pucker up and push through. There are very few turnaround places. I hit my skid plate and smacked my rear a few times so a 4WD vehicle with bit more clearance than a stock Mojave on stock Wildpeaks would fare batter. Another rain or two and I’m not sure this road will be passable. Do not bring an AWD soft reader. You will not make it. The good news is there is a tower close and on AT&T, I was mostly able to keep a tad bit of signal. Otherwise this is just a mining claim area and there are tons of roughly cut trails.

I have completed this loop in the past, but I considered it too scary to complete this time. Made it counterclockwise through the cutout, but beware beyond that - it becomes hard to turn around, and then there is a committing off-camber washout with serious risk of rolling into a larger ditch. I was in my 3” suspension lift 4Runner and I had the two biggest wheel lifts of my life before I chickened out and spent almost half an hour trying to reverse myself out of the position I’d worked myself into - had to use every traction aid available to get back out. Interesting, and probably drivable, but not recommended unless you’ve got a much bigger truck, much smaller atv/bike, or way more guts than me. Good luck!

Extremely hard trail. People here made it seem impossible. Did this on a 2011 2WD Nissan frontier on normal tires. Just spotted my girlfriend while she drove. This is about the turn around in the trail. The canyon is FULL OF ROCKS

This trail is severely degraded in many areas and could be possibly washed completely out if more severe rain exists. Proceed with extreme caution because there are few places to turn around. Rocks continue to fall at the railroad cut through the mountain and you will be improvising your way through many parts of the road by rock stacking and shoveling. Walk ahead of your vehicle to check road status if you can!

Did this loop in our RAV4 TRD Off Road and I gotta say whoever said it was easy must have been in a lofted bronco or wrangler. Don’t get me wrong we were capable of completing the trail but there were a few sketchy parts like ledges and big rocks that scraped the undercarriage. For a crossover like a RAV4 I’d put this in medium category.

A very arid trail networknetwork that’s fun to drive and plenty of areas to explore on foot. I took the time to pull off the trail. Enjoy the view of the mountains read a book and relax in the silence. There are some steep locations with loosewith loose gravel, but other than that a very easy and manageable trail if you’re just looking to get off-road a little bit
