Trail Overview
ATV Trail #979 starts out as a graded road, as a continuation of McKnight Canyon Road. It stays wide and graded until the livestock corral after about a half mile. From there, it becomes more primitive and enters a rocky wash. The trail either parallels the wash on a grassy, overgrown track or rides directly in the wash, which is full of cobble and is a very bumpy, slow-going ride. Expect some small washouts and uneven ground entering and exiting the wash, including some deeper ruts. The rocks in the wash are very loose and ping you around, but it’s a very wide wash, so you can try to pick the smoothest line. It looks very overgrown and not often trafficked. The legal trail dead ends in the wash after almost 2 miles.
Difficulty
This is a moderate route because it mostly goes through a rocky wash that is physically demanding and difficult for traction. However, the first half mile on the west side is a smooth, graded road.
