Trail Overview

This is a good introduction to Wharton State Forest and the Pine Barrens. Typically this is an easy route. Wet weather creates large "puddles" in depressions in the trail that require some attention. It makes for a nice morning or afternoon trip with friends or family. There are good opportunities for photography and outdoor recreation along this route.

Difficulty

Typically this route could be run with 2WD. The trails are mostly packed, gravelly sand. There are some spots that when dry are more of a sugar sand that can be challenging without 4WD. When it's wet, there can be "puddles" up to about 18 inches in depth that may have a soft bottom.

History

It's interesting to note that on this trail approaching the furnace ruins, Andrew Rider, owner of the Hampton Cranberry Bogs, his daughter, his brother, and another passenger were ambushed in 1916 by a group of robbers seeking the $4,000 cash payroll the Riders were carrying to the village. The Rider party was able to escape with the payroll, but Andrew, his daughter, and the passenger were wounded, and Andrew's brother, Henry, was killed. After the attack, the bandits fled into the woods. Luckily, a neighbor had noticed a strange car and was able to furnish the police with enough information to eventually capture most of the gang.

Nice drive. Family friendly. Bookended by lakes and good intro to the Pine Barrens unique ecosystem of pitch pines, sand, and ash. Dirt, hard-packed sand, pavement... no real obstacles to speak of. passes a historic monument. Passed a few rigs on to more challenging trails, but also saw a Toyota Corolla and a Prius, if that gives you any sense of what can handle this road.

First time in this park. The trails were hard packed gravel and some areas are semi hard sand.

First time out with the Wife and Kid so wanted something easy. Did the 5 miles from 206 to Carranza Rd. Stopped at the Furnace for a quick lunch. A few trucks, Subarus and an AWD Lexus. definitely an easy part of the trail. I would rate a 1 but it is single lane most of the way with plenty of pull offs for passing.

Super easy for 2wd RAV4. Drought. Crowned road sometimes so high clearance is needed but my RAV is stock clearance and it was fine. Saw one or two folks

There is one spot where a stream floods the road. We were there without any recent rains, but there was a 10-15 ft wide 6-10 inch deep water hole

Trip was so fun, first time here, sadly the forest fires gave what was once beautiful a very eerie feeling. Water after yesterday’s storm was fun to plow through although we had to abandon some spots due to not having a winch. All and all it was a fun trip and we can’t wait to go back!!

Good conditions, pools of water along the trail (regularly less than 1 ft), although some pools are 2 ft deep roughly. Loose sand everywhere and I highly recommend atleast having 4WD a backup incase you get stuck. Many stops along the trail where there are lakes and streams to view.

Easy trail. It was raining a bit, but that did not change the trail's difficulty. There were a couple of deep spots, but they were easy to maneuver. I have seen a Subaru navigate this trail. Not too busy; it was a cool day in the woods.
