Trail Overview
The Willow Creek Ranch Cutoff is a fantastic, highly recommended alternative to the dense "pinstripe" sagebrush found at the southern end of Streshley Springs. This engaging trail serves as a vital link, twisting and turning its way along the regional power line corridor as it transitions between the rugged interior hills and the main paved Reese River-Lone Road. The driving experience is spirited and technical, featuring a series of "whoop-de-doos" and rolling hills that offer expansive, majestic views of the surrounding Great Basin in almost every direction. As you crest each ridge, the vastness of the Reese River Valley unfolds before you. However, don't let the scenery distract you from the track; the trail features numerous off-camber sections and deep, established ruts. Careful tire placement is essential to avoid "high-centering" your differentials on the tall center berms. You will also need to navigate around scattered boulders and manage a few short, steep climbs and descents that add a healthy dose of fun to the route. Surprisingly, this cut-over often provides a few bars of LTE coverage. While this is a rare luxury in the Toiyabes, signals can be blocked by the undulating hills. Download offline maps to avoid missing the junction with the main road. Nevada is remote and arid. Carry at least one gallon of water per person per day, extra fuel, and a full-sized spare tire.

Difficulty
Rated a 3 due to the combination of deep ruts, off-camber tilts, and rocky obstacles. Vehicles with oversized tires will find it easier to navigate the deep ruts and rocky sections. Some ruts are deep enough to catch low-hanging components.
History
The Willow Creek Ranch Cutoff traverses land that has been central to Austin's ranching heritage for over 150 years. The "Willow Creek Ranch" was one of the valley's early agricultural mainstays, providing the beef and hay necessary to sustain the "Silver Queen" city of Austin during its peak. The power lines you follow today represent the modern infrastructure that keeps these remote outposts connected, tracing a path through the same foothills where 19th-century vaqueros once drove cattle between the high mountain meadows and the valley floor.
