Trail Overview
Upper Wheeler Wash offers an easy, highly scenic descent through a wide, meandering dry wash basin, making it ideal for beginners and scenic cruisers in four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes. This 4.1-mile route drops approximately 1,060 feet from its starting elevation of 5,365 feet down to 4,304 feet, winding through impressive box canyons with unique rock formations. The primary surface consists of loose gravel and sand, requiring basic traction but offering a highly forgiving driving experience with plenty of room for vehicles to pass each other.
As the trail progresses deeper into the wash, keep an eye out for local wildlife including wild horses and burros that frequent the Spring Mountains area. The route concludes at a narrow passage that connects to the Lower Wheeler Wash Trail; this final pinch point acts as a natural barrier for wider vehicles, limiting further forward progress to dirt bikes or travel on foot. Navigable year-round depending on local weather conditions, this trail provides an excellent, low-stress dirt adventure with minimal technical obstacles, perfect for combining with other nearby trails in the Wheeler Pass network.
