Trail Overview
This moderately challenging 20-mile trail through the rugged Stillwater Range of Nevada offers offroaders spectacular high-desert ridge views and a true sense of backcountry solitude. Starting near the landmark Steam Shovel, the route quickly climbs from an elevation of 4,778 feet up to a peak of 7,134 feet, presenting a mix of well-maintained yet lightly traveled dirt paths. A four-wheel-drive vehicle with high clearance or a capable SxS is highly recommended to navigate the steep, winding grades and the variable terrain. Offroaders should be prepared for remote conditions and should carry tools to clear frequent fallen trees that can block the trail.
Mid-route, the trail winds near an old mining area where the track transitions into sharp, jagged, medium-sized rocks that present a significant tire-puncture hazard; carrying at least one full-size spare tire is highly advised. Due to its high elevation, this route is strictly seasonal and remains impassable during the winter, spring, and late fall due to deep, lingering snow drifts. With over 5,110 feet of cumulative elevation gain, the trail demands attentive driving but rewards travelers with panoramic vistas of Cornish Peak and the vast, surrounding Nevada desert basin.
Access Description
This route is strictly seasonal and remains impassable during winter, spring, and late fall due to deep snow drifts at higher elevations. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or capable SxS is required. Travelers should carry at least one full-size spare tire due to sharp, jagged rocks near the mining area, and bringing a chainsaw or handsaw is highly recommended to clear frequent fallen trees blocking the road.
