Trail Overview

Railroad Canyon is a moderate trail just south of Las Vegas. It begins by crossing underneath the railroad tracks at a tunnel built in 1929. You then roll through a series of hills with great desert views until you reach a challenging wash section. Turn around here if you don't have a lift and off-road tires. If you choose to enter the wash, be prepared to traverse several ledges and small waterfalls as you head deeper into the desert. Either way, you are treated to fantastic desert scenery.

Difficulty

Most of the trail is easy dirt road. if you enter the wash, there are several ledges and waterfalls to climb. Nothing a stock Jeep can't make, but a small lift and larger off-road tires are recommended.

Beginning portion of the trail is a little rocky and has some rolling hills to climb, 2WD is fine most of the way in. I took the first wash route with the rock ledges. Plan out your routes and there’s little chance you’ll have any issues, 4 lo throughout most of this area. Couple of small off camber climbs as you traverse the wash, as you climb out and head back down into the next wash. The hillside has a large quantity of small fishhook and spiny star cacti littered around. There are a few smaller rock ledges and gardens in the wash. One dugout of camber climb out of the wash to be ready for. More rock ledges and gardens follow, before arriving back to the hill climb for the loop. Hill climb is a little rough with smaller tires, had to hit it a little hard and keep in it to make the climb out in 4 Lo. 4Lo for a few of the descents on the way out. The last hill climb is slightly off camber with very large dugouts near the top. I would except some 3 wheeling in IFS trucks with

Lots of technical crimes on this trail. At the top of the trail, the loop is impassable without severe lift kits and vehicle mods where it connects back to the trail. During the climbs, I managed to crush my tailpipe and catch a good boulder denting in my front bumper on the driver side. I was in my power wagon and had a friend with me in a raptor. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend it to anybody with technical experience and a high clearance vehicle.

Awesome trail and at night too. Deff recommend 33+ 4x4 and some clearance. First step up ledge into canyon is doable just check your wheel placement. Most obstacles you can go around. Be prepared always if going solo. Have fun!

This trail has a few big steps that require a lifted vehicle to get over. Someone has stacked rocks to make it easier, but that is sketchy. I've done it in my Jeep with 35s (easy) my Tacoma with a 2" lift (took some work) and my Honda Talon (easy). Best to start from the east side of I-15 and travel through the underpass to access.
