Trail Overview
Charleston Peak View Road begins very narrow, with little room for vehicles to pass. Ruts reach 6–8 inches deep, and a long stretch of rock gardens contains rocks ranging from 2–8 inches in diameter, although the rocks become smaller after about 0.3 miles. Some overgrown vegetation is present, but pinstriping is generally avoidable. The route travels toward the highway with excellent views of Charleston Peak and the surrounding mountain ranges. Camping is abundant throughout, with numerous level campsites offering scenic mountain views.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of its narrow terrain, 6–8-inch ruts, and extended rock gardens with rocks reaching 8 inches. The obstacles require careful driving but remain relatively mild.
History
The BLM lands south of Pahrump lie along historic travel corridors used by Indigenous peoples for generations and later by Spanish explorers, miners, ranchers, and settlers crossing the Mojave Desert. Portions of the nearby Old Spanish Trail became an important 19th-century trade route connecting settlements in New Mexico with Southern California, leaving the region with a long history of desert travel and exploration.
