Trail Overview
Callville Wash South 98 begins with an easy and well-graded route, but as you progress, you will encounter a fun series of gatekeeper shelves that elevate the trail's difficulty, rating it as a 4. This section tests your driving skills while offering a sense of excitement as you navigate the rocky terrain. The canyon provides a stunning mix of in-wash driving and traversing over the hills to bypass the more challenging areas. Keep an eye out for a narrow slot canyon section; however, you'll need to park and walk back to access it. Throughout the trail, the landscape transitions from narrow passages to wider areas, flanked by large hillsides and towering cliffs that create a dramatic atmosphere. As you reach the end of the trail, you'll find yourself at what is currently a low water line, with limited access points to hang out by the water. However, suppose you're fortunate enough to secure a waterside spot. In that case, the view across the water towards Callville Marina is lovely, making it an ideal location to spend the day soaking in the water and the scenery. Alternative routes offer more technical rocky sections or an easier way around, allowing you to tailor your adventure as you work your way down. Important Note: There is no cell service at the start or throughout most of the trail, but you can expect to find around two bars of LTE near the marina. Be sure to download your offline maps before heading out, and always prepare adequately for the desert environment by bringing sufficient water and supplies.
