Trail Overview
This out-and-back spur trail off Sugarloaf Road is not quite a mile and a half in length, but it's well worth the drive. It's a sandy two-track through the grass for most of the trail, with a little bit of gravel and rock here and there. About 0.8 miles from the trailhead, a rise in elevation provides a 360-degree view that is simply awe-inspiring. Aside from hardly noticeable Burlington Northern double track running alongside Toadstool Road just over a mile to the west, you can see rolling hills carpeted with grass for miles and miles in every direction - very much the same as they appeared 150 years ago to Lakota people who inhabited the area. The views of these oblaye pahapi ("hills of the prairie") are some of the best views Nebraska has to offer. Antelopes are likely. At the elevated rise, flowering cacti and other wildflowers are abundant, and an interesting variety of rocks can be seen as well.
