Trail Overview

Conklin (Forest Road 924) is an out-and-back trail that runs north-south, meandering over rolling hills in the Oglala National Grassland. The trailhead is located a mile south of the South Dakota-Nebraska border on Hat Creek Road. The entire trail is two-track, on a grass-covered sandy surface that is surrounded by mixed-grass prairie. You will need to open (and close) several gates along the way and should expect to share parts of the trail with grazing cattle. You will also likely see antelope or elk. Several other trails connect to this trail. There are no restrooms or designated staging areas, but there is cell coverage.
