Trail Overview
Whitetail Reservoir is a moderately challenging 9.6-mile out-and-back trail near Butte, Montana, perfect for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs looking for a secluded wilderness escape ending at a pristine beachfront campsite. Branching off Delmoe Lake Road southeast of Delmoe Lake, the route starts relatively easy as it winds through sandy washes and over small rocks, occasionally requiring low-range gearing on steeper sections. The first major test is a steep hill climb featuring small ledges and loose rocks that demands careful line selection. After conquering this climb, the trail narrows significantly through tight trees, climbing from an elevation of 6,161 feet to a maximum of 7,522 feet with over 1,850 feet of cumulative gain.
Around the 4.5-mile mark, the canopy opens into a sprawling meadow where deep mud holes and grazing cattle are common. A past windstorm has left numerous downed trees across the path, requiring tight bypasses and making this route unsuitable for full-size trucks; carrying a chainsaw for trail maintenance is highly recommended. The journey continues through three or four small water crossings that can reach up to 24 inches deep in late summer, eventually passing a small cabin before heading directly to the reservoir. Rated a moderate 5 out of 10, this route requires about two and a half hours each way, culminating in limited but highly coveted beachfront camping spots at the water's edge.
