Trail Overview

Up and Up is a scenic 5.9-mile out-and-back trail near Lake Como, Montana, ideal for drivers seeking a moderate climb with sweeping lake views and a dramatic cliffside overlook. Beginning as an easy, two-vehicle-wide dirt road accessible to two-wheel-drive and low-clearance vehicles, the route steadily climbs from 4,194 feet to an elevation of 5,422 feet. As the trail ascends the slopes of the Bitterroot National Forest, the terrain shifts dramatically halfway through, transitioning into a narrow, rocky, and uneven track with loose stones. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and off-road SUVs are recommended to navigate the upper portion of the route, where the elevation gain totals approximately 1,254 feet. Along the upper section, the trail narrows significantly with dense vegetation overgrowth, making trail stripes or minor cosmetic scratches highly likely for mid-size and full-size rigs. This technical rating 3 trail ends at a turnaround point where a very short uphill foot path leads to a massive, spectacular cliff overlook offering panoramic views of the surrounding Como Peaks and Lake Como below. While there is no formal campground at the terminus, dispersed camping is possible with visible evidence of established fire rings, though space is limited. Drivers should prepare for tight squeezes and keep a keen eye out for oncoming traffic on the narrow upper segments of this scenic Montana climb.
