Trail Overview

Smart Creek is a scenic, easygoing 4.7-mile trail near Philipsburg, Montana, that is perfect for novice offroaders, scenic cruisers, and those looking to explore the beautiful Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Following the drainage of its namesake creek, the trail climbs gently from an elevation of 4,531 feet to 5,087 feet near the base of Henderson Mountain and Sunrise Mountain. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes will find the route highly accessible, offering a relaxing drive through dense pine forests and open valleys with stunning mountain vistas. The trail features a primarily unpaved dirt and gravel surface, though it can become quite muddy and slick with deep water puddles during wet weather. With a technical rating of 2, the trail is mostly straightforward but remains unmaintained, meaning travelers may encounter occasional shallow water crossings, minor washouts, and small obstacles like loose rocks or fallen branches under 12 inches. The road is typically one to two vehicles wide, so drivers should remain alert for oncoming traffic and be prepared to use the few available pullouts. Dispersed camping is highly limited along this route, with only one or two small spots available, so travelers should plan to camp elsewhere in the surrounding national forest. This trail serves as an excellent connector or a standalone afternoon drive, providing a peaceful escape into the rugged backcountry.
