Trail Overview

This is an amazing trail that begins at the north end of Whitefish Lake and meanders through Stillwater State Forest, Flathead National Forest, past Upper Whitefish Lake and up to Red Meadow Lake. The trail is very well maintained, and does have some steep and rocky sections, but overall, is easily accessible. You can then continue east, past Red Meadow Lake, where the road ends at the North Fork Road. Hang a right and head down to Polebridge, a small, eclectic town with no electricity. From Polebridge, its an easy 45-minute drive down the North Fork Road to Columbia Falls. Views are amazing the entire trip, and the forest headed up to Red Meadow Lake is lush and beautiful.

We took this road/trail - whatever you want to call it. It was bumpy, potholes, dirt/dusty. People were passing going 50 mph. Some parts were paved, if you call that paved. We took the road from Columbia Falls north to Polebridge before entering Glacier NP.

Just hit the east side of the trail, if you can really call it that. 1/2 tar, 1/2 gravel roads with 45-50mph local traffic - headlights on. Some of the road is sprayed to keep dust down, but not at any of the scenic overlook spots. Shouldn’t be more than a couple years before this leg is completely tar roads based on the amount of traffic. The northern and western portions may be different.

Explored the western and northern legs of the route. Trail is open and easy to navigate. Encountered lots of bicycle traffic along the way.

Snow obstructions appear to have melted. It was a rainy day, so the roads were just wet with some large puddles. Weather forecasts call for some snow in the higher elevations over the weekend, but as of today, the roads were clear.

The road was dry and typical of summer riding. Lower dust than in high summer. About a mile south from Red Meadow Lake, avalanche packed snow is piled. Impassable for my bike- steep onset of snowpack, but could be passable for high clearance 4x4s with trax. Only about 100 feet that I could see of snowpack.

Totally open from Whitefish side over to North Fork Road. A couple of puddles and potholes along the way but most small SUVs would be fine.

the first 15-20 miles are great, then the road splits and quickly becomes impassable due to ~2ft snow in the road. too early in the season to make it through.
